Across from the Mess Hall is the Canteen, reconfigured from the original bar. The room’s exposed finishes tell the history of the Veterans Hall, with its original steel and wood structure, new shear walls, drink railings made of repurposed wood flooring that was dismantled during the rebuild, exposed pipes and overhead air ducts. These elements provide the Canteen an industrial look and feel and show the extensive structural and engineering work.Additional construction on the basement level includes new electrical and mechanical spaces, new ADA-accessible men’s and women’s restrooms, subgrade waterproofing and insulation. Restroom door hardware was repurposed from the original building.
